Fairview Cellars 2001 Merlot Cabernet
Canadian Red
Merlot and Cabernet form this red blend from the Okanagan. The six-acre property near Oliver was purchased in the late nineteen-eighties, and Bordeaux varieties were planted from the early nineteen-nineties. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc occupy most of the site. The winery opened at the turn of the century beside the Fairview golf course, within one of Canada's warmest grape-growing areas.
Château Lamartine 2001 Expression Cahors
French Red
Fruit in alcohol, vanilla wood and a touch of spice appear with a supple palate and chocolate character. The wine shows violet and dark reflections. Côt, also known as Malbec, grows on clay-limestone terroir and is matured in barrel. The tannins are very fine and the profile has elegance. Production amounted to twenty thousand bottles.

French Red
Blackberry and boysenberry fruit accompany floral, plum and raspberry notes. Merlot forms ninety percent of the blend, with Cabernet Sauvignon accounting for the balance. The profile is light to medium in body, with silky tannins and fine mid-palate sweetness. The middle is defined, the fruit is not overdone, and the finish is medium in length.
Louis Jadot 2001 Corton-Pougets Grand Cru
French Red
Cherry jam appears with raspberry, menthol, herbs and earth. The wine is medium-bodied, ample and expansive, with sweet Bing cherry. Red fruit, mineral and spice are also present. A velvety quality accompanies the finish, and the profile has a firm tannic edge. The wine is made from Pinot Noir and comes from Corton in Burgundy.

Canadian Red
Cabernet Sauvignon accounts for forty-six percent of the blend, with thirty-five percent Merlot and nineteen percent Cabernet Franc. Dry cedar, peppery leather, green bean and bell pepper sit beside mint, tobacco and smoky vanilla. The wine has ample extract and fourteen percent alcohol. Production totalled 1,800 cases. Root vegetable, smoky liquorice and peppery olive are also present.

Dark cherry and prune are layered with dried rose, orange peel, menthol and wet stone. The palate is rich and powerful, yet the fruit remains poised, with firm Nebbiolo tannins and fresh acidity providing balance. Tar, liquorice, fennel and early truffle notes add savoury complexity through the long finish. Decant carefully and serve with braised beef, game, porcini or aged Parmigiano.

Scottish Whisky
Peaty and energetic, with wood smoke, maraschino cherry and toasted pastry lifted by a grapey sweetness. The palate is balanced but forceful, bringing warm spice, oak and ripe fruit through a firm layer of peat. A quinine-like bitterness adds definition without taking over. The finish is long and smoky, tapering through cardamom, ginger and a final touch of fruit.

Mulberry, blackcurrant and plum rise with sage, rosemary and black pepper, followed by tobacco leaf, anise and gently developed oak. The palate remains rich and concentrated, with savoury herbal detail, fine acidity and long, silky tannins. Mature yet composed, it closes with spice, depth and remarkable persistence.
Trimbach 2001 Riesling Clos Sainte Hune
French White
Dry and concentrated, with ripe citrus, yellow orchard fruit and white flowers held by a clear mineral line. The palate is taut yet generous, carrying finely layered fruit through bright, measured acidity. Subtle honeyed and stony notes develop with air, while the finish remains exceptionally long, precise and composed, showing the depth of a mature Riesling without losing freshness.

Australian Red
Rich and still youthful, with blackberry, blackcurrant and cherry layered with dark chocolate, liquorice, vanilla, mint, sandalwood and dried fruit. Full-bodied and concentrated, the palate is fleshy yet controlled, with fine ripe tannins that turn gently chalky through a long, smooth finish. Decant for about three hours and serve with veal chops or lamb.

Portuguese Fortified
Violet and lavender rise above dried cherry, fig and sweet red fruit, with cinnamon, nutmeg, cedar and spiced chocolate adding mature complexity. The palate is medium-bodied and sweet, its resolved tannins carrying toffee, berry and a touch of cold tea. Balanced and persistent, it is ready to enjoy after careful decanting.
