Dr Christopher and Mary Penfold established Penfolds at Magill Estate in 1844, with Mary assuming full responsibility for the growing winery after Christopher’s death in 1870. Max Schubert became the first chief winemaker in 1948 and created the first experimental Grange in 1951, continuing production in secret when the project was initially rejected. Peter Gago is now only the fourth chief winemaker in the house’s history, leading a team that builds on a multi-region blending philosophy. Penfolds operates as a distinct Treasury Wine Estates division, extending its house style from Australia into current projects in California, France and China.
Penfolds 2020 Bin 23 Pinot Noir

Cranberry red in colour, this Pinot Noir brings wild raspberry, strawberry conserve and a faint green-olive note with daphne, azalea, camellia, rose, rosewater, saffron and toasty oak. Cold lamb, forest floor, strawberry pips, pomegranate and rhubarb appear with cola, bergamot, graphite and wet-riverstone minerality. Fruit comes from Tasmania, Henty and the Adelaide Hills. Maturation lasts seven months in French oak barriques, twenty-four percent new.
Penfolds 2014 RWT Barossa Valley Shiraz

Medium-deep crimson colour accompanies dark berry and dark chocolate aromas, together with meaty vanilla notes. Dense blackberry, praline and graphite flavours meet fine, grainy textures, persistent acidity and savoury mocha oak. Roasted chestnut and polished leather are also present in a balanced profile. The fruit is entirely Shiraz from the Barossa Valley, and maturation takes place only in French oak.

Blackberry, mulberry, currant and plum accompany herb, dark chocolate, liquorice and panforte notes. Fine, powdery tannins appear in a dense profile. The finish is long, with chocolate and mineral detail. Red raspberry, dark berry and pepper also appear. Shiraz is joined by nine percent Cabernet Sauvignon. Maturation takes place in old 1,460-litre vats, with little overt oak character.

Australian Red
Ripe blackcurrant, cassis, blackberry and plum form a concentrated core, lifted by violet and a thread of fresh acidity. Cedar, tobacco, dark cocoa and baking spice add measured oak detail without obscuring the fruit. The palate is full and structured, with firm, fine-grained tannins carrying the wine toward a long, composed finish. Decant before serving with roast beef or grilled lamb.
Penfolds Cabernet Sauvignon Bin 407 2018
Australian Red
A polished South Australian Cabernet with cassis, blackberry, violet, bay leaf, tobacco, cedar and graphite. Carefully judged oak frames the fruit without crowding it, while the medium- to full-bodied palate balances concentration with freshness. Fine, persistent tannins lead into a savoury, chocolate-tinged finish. Serve it with grilled steak, roast lamb or a rich mushroom dish.

Australian Red
Rich and mature, with blackcurrant, plum and dark berry layered with chocolate, caramel, mocha, cedar, menthol, smoke and tobacco. The medium-bodied palate is concentrated yet balanced, carrying supple tannins, sweet fruit and firm chocolate-toned structure through a long, warming finish. Decant for about one hour and serve with lamb, venison or slow-cooked beef.

Australian Red
Opulent yet precise, with blackberry, mulberry, plum and cassis layered with liquorice, espresso, dark chocolate, smoked meat, eucalyptus, cedar and leather. Full-bodied and concentrated, the palate combines ripe dark fruit with firm velvety tannins, freshness and excellent balance. The finish is long, spicy and complex; decant for two to three hours and serve with lamb, venison or beef.

Australian Red
Rich and still youthful, with blackberry, blackcurrant and cherry layered with dark chocolate, liquorice, vanilla, mint, sandalwood and dried fruit. Full-bodied and concentrated, the palate is fleshy yet controlled, with fine ripe tannins that turn gently chalky through a long, smooth finish. Decant for about three hours and serve with veal chops or lamb.
Penfolds 2006 Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon

A deeply coloured Cabernet Sauvignon with cassis, blackberry and plum layered over liquorice, dark chocolate, cedar and tobacco. The full-bodied palate is rich and muscular, carrying black olive, coffee and clove through fine, grainy tannins. Fresh acidity keeps the concentration in balance, while the long finish shows mature savoury detail alongside persistent dark fruit. Decant carefully before serving with roast beef or lamb.

Refined and fully developed, with blackberry, blackcurrant and plum layered with liquorice, cinnamon, dark chocolate, dried herbs and smoky oak. Medium-bodied yet concentrated, the palate balances sweet ripe fruit with silky tannins, savoury cedar and a long, bittersweet finish. Decant for about two hours and serve with veal, lamb or slow-roasted beef.

Australian Red
Powerful and intensely youthful, with blueberry, redcurrant, plum and mulberry joined by coffee bean, chocolate, allspice, Szechuan pepper and dry herbs. Richly textured and dense, the palate combines bright fruit with remarkably smooth tannins, precise balance and a long, spicy finish. Give it about four hours in a decanter and serve with roast lamb or beef.
