Château Mouton Rothschild 2014 Pauillac
Concentrated yet finely controlled, with cassis, dark berries, violet and lead pencil layered over restrained creamy oak and savoury herbs. Preserved plum and kirsch sit at the centre of a mature, savoury bouquet, layered with incense, cigar box, leather, tobacco and tilled earth. Medium- to full-bodied, the palate is graceful and satiny, carrying dried red berry and exotic spice over a gently chewy structure. The finish is long, fragrant and tea-toned. Decant carefully and serve with roast lamb or aged cheese.
Domaine Armand Rousseau 1994 Chambertin Grand Cru
Mature and remarkably balanced, with red fruit retaining freshness despite the vintage's leaner reputation. The palate avoids undue heaviness or tired fruit, showing a composed structure and firm, lightly green-edged tannins on the finish. It is drinking well now and may continue to hold. Stand upright, open carefully and serve with roast game or earthy mushroom dishes.
