AboutRoagna
The Roagna family has made wine in Barbaresco since the nineteenth century. The purchase of Pajé in 1953 and Cascina Pira in Castiglione Falletto in 1990 gave the estate vineyards in both Barbaresco and Barolo. Luca Roagna joined in 2001, extending the time wines spend with their skins and ageing in wood.
Old vines are central to the estate’s approach, with grass left between the rows and no irrigation or fertilizer. For its red wines, Roagna removes the stems without crushing the berries and keeps the skins submerged in the wine for an average of sixty to one hundred days. Long ageing follows in neutral wood, concrete or ceramic vessels.
Roagna 2019 Langhe Rosso
Fresh fruit, pressed flowers and roses accompany good concentration, balanced acidity and a firm backbone. Young Nebbiolo vines are used. Fermentation takes place in wooden vats with a pied de cuve made from indigenous yeasts and lasts about ten days. Submerged-cap maceration lasts at least two months. Maturation uses neutral oak and concrete tanks for about five years.
Roagna 2017 Langhe Rosso
Tart cherry, leather and tar meet zesty acidity and solid structure, with dried red cherry, kirsch, mint, cinnamon and orange peel adding further detail. Fruit is hand harvested from vines between twenty and twenty-five years old. Fermentation lasts about ten days in wooden vats, followed by at least two months of submerged-cap maceration and roughly five years in neutral oak and cement.
Roagna 2018 Langhe Rosso
Dried red cherry, mint, spice, tobacco, dried leaves and worn leather shape this wine, made entirely from Nebbiolo. Fruit comes from young vines in Barolo- and Barbaresco-designated vineyards. Fermentation begins in wooden vats with an indigenous pied de cuve, followed by submerged-cap maceration. The wine then spends about five years in neutral oak and concrete. This red comes from Piedmont in Italy.
Roagna Pajè 2017 Barbaresco
Rose petals, red cherry and cranberry lead a restrained but finely detailed bouquet, joined by tobacco, dried flowers and warm spice. The palate is silky and light-footed, with vibrant acidity and fine, sandy tannins giving shape to the delicate fruit. Mushroom, leather and gravelly mineral notes emerge with air. Graceful rather than forceful, it finishes long and gently savoury, with dark berries, liquorice and a lingering earthy lift.
Roagna 2018 Pira Barolo DOCG
Pale ruby in colour, with preserved strawberry, red cherry and currant framed by rose petal, lavender, dried herbs, tobacco and mint. The palate is bright and linear, combining vivid acidity with refined, closely woven tannins. Sandalwood, licorice and graphite add depth before an energetic, long and finely poised finish.
