AboutLindores Abbey Distillery
The Exchequer Roll of 1494 records malt sent to Friar John Cor at Lindores Abbey to make aqua vitae—the earliest known written reference to Scotch whisky production. The McKenzie Smith family has cared for the abbey estate for more than a century, and Drew and Helen McKenzie Smith spent roughly two decades working to return distilling to the site. Construction began in 2016, the stills ran the following year, and the first modern Lindores single malt was released in 2021.
The distillery ferments for about 117 hours and uses a pair of spirit stills. Its single malt range includes whisky matured in bourbon, wine and sherry casks.
Lindores MCDXCIV Lowland Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Mellow vanilla and caramel lead an elegant, softly fruited aroma, followed by orchard fruit and sweet pear drops. The palate is silky and creamy, balancing dried fruit with bright citrus and a restrained touch of spice. Toffee-apple richness gives the whisky depth without heaviness, while the finish is delicate, gently sweet and persistent. Serve neat or with a little water.
