AboutFranz Strohmeier
Franz Strohmeier works in the green hills of West Styria, with steep vineyards near Stainz, Bad Gams and Lestein on gneiss soils. The family farm grew from mixed agriculture and livestock keeping, and Strohmeier now farms organically and biodynamically. Blauer Wildbacher, the local grape behind Schilcher, grows alongside Sauvignon Blanc, Zweigelt, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay and Muskateller.
Fermentations begin spontaneously, additions are avoided, and most wines mature in used wood before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. Skin contact and ageing vary from wine to wine.
Franz Strohmeier 2019 TLZ Rot No. 10
Ripe small red fruit and blueberry meet smoky character. The palate is smooth and delicate, with fine tannins. Fruit comes from twenty-eight-year-old vines rooted in gneiss and rocky soils. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel, with five weeks of skin contact before pressing. The wine matures for twenty months in wooden barrels and is bottled without added sulphur.
