AboutDon Mateo de la Sierra

The Vieyra family has made mezcal in Michoacán since 1840, carrying the work through six generations in the high country around Pino Bonito. Don Mateo de la Sierra is named for Don Mateo Rangel, an earlier family master distiller; Emilio Vieyra Rangel and María Delia Vargas continue the work today.

Agaves are roasted in a conical volcanic-stone oven, milled mechanically, fermented with native yeast in oak vats and distilled in a Filipino-style still. The family grows Cupreata agave in its nurseries and works to protect pollinator habitat through community conservation projects.

Don Mateo de la Sierra Cupreata Mezcal Flask

Mexican Tequila & Mezcal
$61.99

Roasted agave brings a smoky-sweet core, framed by herbaceous notes, wet earth and a distinctive mineral edge. Cupreata agave grown at altitude in Michoacán contributes a rugged, savoury profile, with pine, moss and red-clay tones adding detail around the smoke. The palate is firm and earthy rather than overtly sweet, carrying cooked agave and gentle heat into a long, mineral finish. Serve neat in a small glass and allow it a few minutes to open before sipping.

Don Mateo de la Sierra Pechuga Mezcal

Mexican Tequila & Mezcal
$204.99

Roasted agave and light smoke lead, followed by pineapple, lime and a measured savoury note. The palate is creamy and softly textured, with dried fruit, warm spice and citrus layered over earthy agave. A traditional pechuga distillation with game birds, venison, fruit and spices adds depth without overwhelming the spirit’s Michoacán character. The finish is gentle but persistent, carrying smoke, citrus, spice and a faint cereal tone. Serve neat in a copita and allow it to open slowly at room temperature.
