Château Angélus
Château Angélus
AboutChâteau Angélus
The bells of Saint-Émilion gave Château Angélus both its name and its emblem. Its vineyard occupies a natural amphitheatre beneath three churches, where the morning, noon and evening ringing once carried across the slopes. The de Boüard de Laforest family arrived in Saint-Émilion in 1782, and eight generations have helped shape the estate.
Merlot grows on the clay-rich slope, with Cabernet Franc on the sandy clay-limestone soils at its foot. Cabernet Franc is a defining part of Angélus, valued for its freshness, fragrance and ageing potential.
Château Angélus 2016
Black plum, blackberry and dark cherry rise from a deeply perfumed bouquet, joined by cedar, violet and a touch of bitter orange. The palate is rich yet energetic, with dense, refined tannins framing generous fruit and a fresh, dry core. Long and poised, it suits roast lamb, beef tenderloin or truffle dishes.
Château Angélus 1997
Sweet blackberry, black-cherry liqueur and prune open into truffle, Provençal olive and gently smoky oak. The palate is rich and broad, yet soft and supple, with moderate tannins supporting the dark fruit. Savoury depth carries through a warm, composed finish. Decant carefully and serve with roast lamb, beef or mushrooms.
