Craven Wines 2024 The Firs Syrah Stellenbosch
South African Red
Violets, blackberry, leafy notes and pepper accompany a sappy palate with concentrated fruit, bright acidity and firm tannins. Syrah from a Devon Valley vineyard planted in the year two thousand grows in deep, clay-rich red soils. Whole bunches are lightly foot-stomped, with gentle pumpovers once or twice daily. After pressing, the wine matures for ten months in concrete. Alcohol is thirteen point zero three percent.

American Red
Blackberry, strawberry and blueberry appear with cherry candy and floral perfume. The palate is light to medium-bodied, bright and fresh, with a soft frame and juicy finish. This red combines ninety-five percent Syrah with five percent Viognier. Winemaking uses whole berries and whole clusters for carbonic fermentation, with ageing in large neutral vats. The vineyard is farmed organically, and alcohol is 12.5 percent.

Berry and cherry fruit notes accompany rose petals, lavender and sage. The wine is modestly tangy, with delicate saline elements and harmonious acidity. The blend includes Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt, Sankt Laurent, Syrah, Merlot, Lagrein, Teroldego, Petit Verdot and Pinot Noir. This dry rosé comes from Burgenland in Austria. The finished wine contains 13.5 percent alcohol.

French Red
Forest fruit and sweet spice shape the aromas. The palate is luscious, with fine tannins on the finish. The blend combines forty percent Cabernet Sauvignon, forty percent Petit Verdot, ten percent Merlot and ten percent Syrah. Vinification took place in concrete tanks, followed by twelve months in oak barrels previously used for one to three vintages. The site has pebbly soil and a continental climate influenced by the nearby Mediterranean Sea.

Juicy black raspberry, violets, peppery herbs and minerality appear in a concentrated, structured profile. The blend is 52% Grenache, 18% Cinsault, 13% Mourvèdre, 12% Syrah and 5% Carignan. The vines average sixty-five years old and grow at 125 metres on sand, blue and red clay and river stones. Vinification takes place in underground concrete vats, with more than four weeks on skins. Ageing lasts twenty months in old oak casks and 600-litre barrels.

Deep ruby colour accompanies garrigue, wild strawberry, cassis, spice and mint. The attack is lively, while the palate is supple and soft. Made entirely from Syrah, the wine comes from clay-limestone and sandy soils with south and southeast exposure. The farming is organic, the style is dry and red, and the wine contains fourteen point five percent alcohol.

Nebbiolo forms most of the blend, with a small portion of Syrah from estate vineyards in the Langhe. Grapes are picked early and pressed gently. Fermentation and maturation take place in stainless steel and used French barriques. The wine has a full, structured profile and contains fourteen percent alcohol.

Argentinian Red
Blackberry, fruitcake and liquorice appear in a dense, smooth profile with concentrated black fruit, firm structure, acidity, substantial tannins and grip. The blend is sixty percent Malbec, fifteen percent Merlot, fifteen percent Cabernet Sauvignon, five percent Syrah and five percent Petit Verdot. Fermentation lasts seven to ten days in stainless steel, with twenty to thirty days of maceration, full malolactic fermentation and twelve months in French oak.

Italian Red
The wine is deep ruby in colour, with dark fruit, coffee, tobacco and spice, while smooth tannins accompany layered flavour. The blend is sixty-five percent Nero d'Avola, twenty-five percent Syrah and ten percent Cabernet Franc. Bush-trained vines grow at 130 metres on calcareous soils with southeast exposure. The grapes are gently pressed and macerated for about two weeks, then fermented at 28–30°C and matured for sixteen months in barriques.

French Red
Dense purple-ruby colour accompanies black cherry, raspberry, wild strawberry, cigar, thyme, bay, eucalyptus, nutmeg, pepper and clove. The palate is harmonious, fruity and fresh. The tannins envelop the palate, with toasted notes in the length. Syrah undergoes three weeks of traditional maceration with indigenous-yeast fermentation. Maturation lasts three months in tank and twelve months in foudres, followed by four months in bottle.

The profile includes red and blue berries, wild dry herbs and a meaty note. Red and black fruit, spice and a long finish are also present. Fruit from vines under twenty years old at Beaucastel and two neighbouring vineyards ferments in wooden and stainless-steel vats. The wines are tasted to determine the final blend, then matured in foudres for two years.

Cinsault accounts for forty-nine percent of the blend, Grenache Noir forty-two percent and Syrah nine percent. The varieties mature separately for twelve months in seasoned 500-litre French oak barrels. Cranberry, watermelon, blueberry and cinnamon are present, with delicate tannins, earth and new leather. The finish carries cranberry and redcurrant. Alcohol is 12.96 percent, and the wine comes from Piekenierskloof.

Cabernet Sauvignon accounts for sixty-four percent of the blend, with Syrah and Carménère each at eighteen percent. Cabernet and Carménère are estate grown, while Syrah comes from Red Brick Vineyard. Fruit is destemmed and hand sorted before crushing. Maturation lasts sixteen months in oak. Blackcurrant, dark fruit, baker's chocolate and vanilla are present. The tannins are pleasant and approachable.
Vincent Ruiz 2022 Yseult Mon Amour Syrah
French Red
Bright red plum and cherry appear with crushed pepper and violet. The tannins are delicate. Syrah comes from limestone and clay soils, with vines averaging sixty years old. Whole bunches macerate for twenty-one days without punching down or pumping over before vertical pressing. The wine ages on its lees for eight months and carries twelve percent alcohol. Farming is organic.

Mushroom, leather and light smoke are present. The red blend comprises sixty-five percent Grenache, fourteen percent Syrah, eleven percent Mourvèdre, four percent Counoise, four percent Cinsault and two percent Terret. The blend is 36% Syrah, 24% Grenache, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc and 8% Mourvèdre. Maturation lasts twenty-two months in French oak barrels; 38% are new, and 15% of the wine matures in foudres.

Purple-red colour accompanies wild blackberry, star anise, rosemary, graphite, mineral notes and salinity. The palate is ample and includes wild fruit. Grenache and Syrah come from the Sambiches site at 340 metres, on red clay and limestone. Grapes are hand harvested and fully destemmed, then fermented separately in concrete. Maturation lasts nine months in amphorae. Serve at 16°C.

Black raspberry, cassis, violet and blood-orange notes are present in a perfumed, lifted profile. The palate is medium-bodied, with ripe fruit and integrated tannins. The blend is 65 percent Grenache, 25 percent Syrah and 10 percent Mourvèdre. Maturation lasts six months, with 20 percent in foudre and the balance in concrete. Production is approximately 3,300 cases.

Deep purple in colour, with ripe blueberry, dark forest berries, liquorice and black cherry. The palate has refined, well-integrated tannins, vibrant acidity and a long, fresh fruit finish. Part of the wine matures for fifteen months in oak barrels. The red is dry and contains fourteen percent alcohol. It is suitable for bottle ageing, and decanting is suggested to enhance the aromas.
Le Coste 2019 Pinotto
Italian Red
Black fruit, earthy notes and spice accompany a delicate, light palate with marked acidity. Pinot Noir and a small proportion of Syrah come from two young plots on volcanic soils at about four hundred and seventy metres. Whole bunches undergo carbonic maceration for one month in old barrels with indigenous yeasts. The wine then spends twelve months on fine lees in oak vats.

French Red
Grenache accounts for seventy-five percent of the blend, with Mourvèdre at fifteen percent and Syrah at ten percent. Deep ruby colour has purple highlights. Cherry, raspberry and blackcurrant appear with black pepper, eucalyptus and leather. The wine is full on the palate, with pure fruit, tannins and a long sense of freshness. Stewed black fruit, mocha and a light animal note are also present.

Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Syrah are vinified separately in open concrete vats with gentle extraction. Dark colour accompanies preserved black fruit, blueberry, ripe blackberry, cassis and prune. Peony and dried chrysanthemum appear with resinous, balsamic notes recalling pine and cypress. Ripe tomato, pink pepper and Espelette pepper are also present. The vines grow in clay-gravel soils over grey marl molasse, and the vineyard is farmed biodynamically.

The vineyards are certified organic.
