About Fürstlich Castell'sches Domänenamt
The Castell family’s twenty-sixth generation tends the vineyards of Fürstlich Castell’sches Domänenamt around the village of Castell in Franken. Germany’s first documented planting of Silvaner took place here in 1659, with twenty-five cuttings brought from Austria. The vineyards lie on gypsum-rich keuper soils, and five of the seven classified sites are owned entirely by the estate. Schlossberg, one of those sites, is planted exclusively to Silvaner. The classified wines ferment mainly with native yeasts in large wooden casks and remain on their lees; some casks are made from oak grown in the family’s forests.
