AboutWine Art Estate

Civil engineer Yiannis Papadopoulos began Wine Art Estate in 1993, reviving a family vineyard in Mikrochori, near Drama, and making wine in his father’s house. Architect Yiannis Kalaitzidis joined a few years later; the estate now has two winery buildings linked by an underground cellar. Papadopoulos’s son Akis returned from studies in Bordeaux in 2009 to become chief winemaker.

The vineyards around Mikrochori and Kali Vrisi are tended and handled separately, parcel by parcel. Greek grapes such as Assyrtiko, Malagousia and Xinomavro grow alongside international varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.

Cabernet Sauvignon accounts for seventy percent of the blend and Agiorgitiko thirty percent. The varieties were vinified separately after a short cold soak, then fermented in stainless steel with regular pump-overs. Following malolactic conversion, the wine matured for twelve months in French oak, one third new. Sour cherries and sweet spices accompany blackberry, pepper, leather and a vegetal note. The palate has pronounced acidity, fleshy tannins and a persistent finish.
