AboutVino di Anna
Anna Martens and Eric Narioo made their first wine together on Etna in 2008, before buying an old Nerello Mascalese vineyard and cellar near Solicchiata in 2010. Their small family estate, Vino di Anna, now spans eight hectares of terraced vineyard plots and olive groves on the volcano’s northern slopes.
The family and a local team tend the vines by hand and select healthy, ripe grapes for the cellar. Fermentation uses the grapes’ own yeasts, with vessels ranging from lava stone and wooden casks to Georgian qvevri, glass and stainless steel. The wines are bottled without filtration, with little or no added sulphur.
Vino di Anna 2021 Palmentino Rosso
Bright crimson colour accompanies red cherry and wild strawberry aromas. The palate is dry and fruit-driven, with juicy ripe tannins and fresh acidity. Organically grown Nerello Mascalese comes from old bush vines on high, terraced vineyards on Etna’s northern face. Half the blend is made in a traditional palmento, thirty percent in Georgian qvevri and twenty percent in a large used oak botte. Indigenous yeasts conduct spontaneous fermentation; the wine rests twelve months on fine lees and is bottled without fining or filtration.
