Vega-Sicilia
AboutVega-Sicilia
Vega Sicilia’s name appears in records from 1577, and professional winemaking began there under Eloy Lecanda in 1864. The Álvarez family acquired the property in 1982 and made it the foundation of the group now called TEMPOS Vega Sicilia.
About 210 of the property’s roughly 1,000 hectares are vineyards, managed parcel by parcel. The estate also makes American-oak barrels in its own cooperage for its long ageing programmes. Valbuena 5º takes its name from five years of ageing between wood and bottle, with Tinto Fino dominant and Merlot used in some vintages.
Vega-Sicilia 2020 Pintia Toro
Spanish Red
Opulent and juicy character appears with a smooth, refined profile. Extraction was reduced during fermentation. Amphorae were incorporated into ageing and the impact of toast was reduced. Freshness is also present. The growing season brought above-average, well-distributed rain. Summer included occasional rain and daily temperature variation. The wine comes from the Toro denomination, and alcohol is 15.5 percent.

Tempranillo comes from vineyards averaging forty years old at about 500 metres. The fruit was harvested by hand in twelve-kilogram boxes. The wine is powerful and subtle, with richness, freshness and balance. Fermentation is followed by malolactic conversion in barrels and tanks, while ageing uses fine- and extra-fine-grained French wood. The wine remains in wood for fifteen months before bottle maturation.
Vega Sicilia Valbuena 5° 2008 Ribera del Duero
Spanish Red
Serious and tightly drawn, with dark cherry and black fruit joined by blood orange, dried herbs, forest floor, black tea and a subtle balsamic note. The palate is long rather than broad, driven by juicy acidity, fine tannins and a firm mineral edge. Savoury and precise through the finish, it rewards decanting and pairs well with lamb or slow-cooked beef.
