Quinta do Vale Meão
AboutQuinta do Vale Meão
Antónia Adelaide Ferreira began Quinta do Vale Meão in 1877, buying 300 hectares of uncultivated land beside the Douro to create a model vineyard. Between 1887 and 1895, the property gained vineyards, cellars, houses, a school, a hospital and chapels. The property has stayed with her descendants, and the family’s first wines under its own name came from the 1999 harvest.
Schist, granite and alluvial soils run through the vineyards, where Douro grape varieties are planted in separate blocks and brought together in the cellar. The restored winery combines granite treading vats with modern equipment. Francisco, Luísa and Jaime share the management of the estate.
Quinta Do Vale Meao 2009/21 Douro
Blackberry, plum and red berries meet violet, dried herbs, graphite and gentle spice. Full-bodied yet poised, the palate combines concentrated fruit with polished tannins, bright acidity and a mineral edge. Traditional granite-lagar work and measured barrel ageing bring depth without obscuring the fruit, leading to a long, savoury finish. Decant for roast lamb, braised beef or aged hard cheese.
Quinta do Vale Meão 2021 Meandro Branco
Very pale yellow-green with silver reflections, the wine combines meadow herbs, white apple, pear, mango and lime zest. Ripe stone fruit and fine acidity meet a mineral-salty finish. Rabigato and Arinto form the blend. The wine is dry and matures on its lees in stainless steel without oak. Its profile is crisp and textured, with basil also present.
Quinta do Vale Meão 2018 Douro
Deeply coloured and concentrated, with a layered aroma that unfolds without any single note dominating. The palate is vibrant and expansive, balancing ripe tannins, polished oak and a creamy texture with notable poise. Power builds through the centre yet never obscures the wine’s elegance. The finish is very long and composed, carrying integrated wood, dark-toned depth and steady freshness.
