AboutPirramimma

Alexander Campbell Johnston founded Pirramimma in 1892, starting with a mixed farm beside McLaren Vale. Four generations later, the estate remains in Johnston family hands: Geoff has worked fifty vintages, while Andrew works in the vineyards. Original concrete vats and old presses remain in use, alongside a cellar of aged fortified wines.

Roughly 300 vineyard acres are divided into forty blocks, planted with thirteen varieties on red loam over limestone and ironstone, with sea breezes from the Gulf of St Vincent. The estate uses compost, cover crops and other biological soil treatments to restore exhausted ground, alongside investments in solar power and water storage. Its plantings include late-ripening Petit Verdot and Tannat, chosen for McLaren Vale’s warm conditions.

Pirramimma 2021 Petit Verdot

Australian Red
$38.99
A delicate nose gives way to a full-bodied rush of dark berry fruit. The palate is bold and hearty, with concentrated flavour and a firm structural line that suits robust food. Richness drives the centre, while the grape's naturally assertive character gives the finish weight and persistence. A confident red for braised beef, grilled lamb or slow-cooked tomato dishes.
