Château Pichon Baron

Château Pichon Baron grew from vineyards assembled by Pierre Desmezures de Rauzan in the late seventeenth century. The property passed to Baron Jacques Pichon de Longueville through his marriage to Rauzan’s daughter in 1694. The estate was divided in 1850: Raoul Pichon de Longueville’s share became Pichon Baron, while his sisters’ portion became the separate Pichon Comtesse estate. Its turreted château followed in 1851; four years later, the official Bordeaux ranking placed the wine among the Second Growths.

Today the estate comprises ninety-two hectares of gravelly Pauillac ground, divided into parcels that receive individual care. Cabernet Sauvignon leads the red plantings, followed by Merlot, with smaller blocks of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. The historic Butte de Pichon Baron supplies the estate’s principal wine. AXA Millésimes acquired the property in 1987 and rebuilt the cellar.
