Penley Estate was established in Coonawarra in 1988 by siblings from the Penfold and Tolley wine families; its name joins those two lineages. In 2015, sisters Ang and Bec Tolley took full ownership. Winemaker Kate Goodman joined for the 2016 harvest.
Coonawarra has a cool maritime climate and terra rossa soils over limestone. Goodman’s approach has included earlier picking and bottling and reduced oak influence, with an emphasis on freshness and energy.
Penley Estate 2020 Atlas Shiraz
Australian Red
Ripe berry fruit is joined by spice and a hint of pepper in a dry, full-bodied style. Oak is integrated rather than dominant, and tannins are present on the palate. The Shiraz is a modern Coonawarra expression with medium-to-full body and generous flavour. The Coonawarra setting has terra rossa soils over limestone and a cool climate.
