North Coast Brewing Company opened in Fort Bragg, California, in 1988, beginning as a local brewpub on the Mendocino coast. Co-founder Mark Ruedrich was its original brewmaster, and the brewery remains independently owned. It brews European and American beer styles. In 2015, North Coast became a certified B Corporation.

Dark and full-bodied, the palate layers roasted malt, espresso and bittersweet chocolate over a smooth, gently creamy texture. Molasses and a subtle dark-fruit tone add depth, while firm hop bitterness keeps the malt sweetness controlled. The finish is long, complex and warming without losing definition. Serve cool with braised beef, smoked brisket, blue cheese or a dark-chocolate dessert, allowing time in the glass for the flavours to open.
