AboutMendel Wines
Mendel Wines began in 2002 as a partnership between Anabelle Sielecki and winemaker Roberto de la Mota, bringing her family’s historic Mendoza vineyard together with his long cellar experience. Sielecki named the estate for her father, Mendel, while the family’s original Malbec parcel at Mayor Drummond in Luján de Cuyo dates to 1928.
De la Mota is a second-generation Argentine winemaker who studied at the National University of Cuyo and in Montpellier. The vineyards extend from old vines in Luján de Cuyo to the higher, stony soils of Paraje Altamira in the Uco Valley.
Mendel 2020 Cabernet Franc Paraje Altamira
Intense ruby colour accompanies raspberry, cherry and pink and black pepper. The tannins are ripe and firm, with a silky texture and lingering finish. Cabernet Franc grows at 1,100 metres in Paraje Altamira on sandy loam over massive calcareous blocks. Grapes are harvested and selected by hand. Maceration lasts twenty-five days. Ageing lasts twelve months in French oak divided equally among new, second-use and third-use barrels.
Mendel Semillon
White flowers and honey lead, joined by herbaceous detail and a measured note of tropical fruit. The palate is smooth and generous without losing its freshness, with coconut and soft smoke adding depth from its time in wood. A rounded texture carries the fruit through the centre, while the finish remains composed and elegant, lingering on honey, herbs and gentle oak.
Mendel 2020 Malbec
Black cherry, raspberry and blackberry lead a deep, generous profile, with violet, sweet oak, espresso, licorice and vanilla in support. The palate is full-bodied and dense, layering black raspberry and plum over roasted herbs and a silky, velvety texture. Rich but balanced, it suits ribeye, lamb, grilled vegetables or firm aged cheeses.
