John Henry Fisher built the stone winery at Mayacamas in 1889 and planted Zinfandel on Napa’s Mount Veeder. Jack and Mary Taylor renamed the property in 1941, expanded the cellar and planted Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. Bob and Elinor Travers took over in 1968; their 1971 Cabernet was selected for the Paris tasting of 1976. The Schottenstein family became involved in 2013 and invested in restoring the vineyards and cellar.
About fifty acres of the 475-acre mountain property are planted, at elevations of roughly 1,800 to 2,200 feet on volcanic rock and ash. Organic farming, early picking and long ageing in mostly used oak guide the estate’s work.

Wild sage, dried herbs and sassafras lead before red currant, damson plum and bitter cherry come into focus. The palate is energetic and firmly structured, with bright acidity and a mineral backbone carrying the fruit rather than sheer weight. Fine tannins add grip, while an iron-streaked savoury note sharpens the long finish. Decant generously and serve with roast beef, lamb or mushrooms.
