Marques de Riscal

Guillermo Hurtado de Amézaga founded Marqués de Riscal in Elciego in 1858 and engaged Bordeaux expertise during its early development. The first wines were bottled in 1862, creating a documented nineteenth-century sequence rather than a broadly stated ancient tradition. The company established a separate Rueda project in 1972, extending its work beyond Rioja while preserving each region’s identity.

In 2006 the City of Wine opened around the historic winery, adding hospitality and architecture to the existing production site. Rioja reds and Rueda whites therefore belong to distinct regional programmes, and no one wine’s technical sheet defines the whole producer. Marqués de Riscal continues from Elciego, connecting its historic Rioja cellars with later work in Rueda.
