Luís Pato
Luís Pato
Luis Pato comes from a Bairrada winegrowing family and bottled the first wine under his own name in 1980. He centred the project on regional grapes, particularly Baga for reds and Bical for whites, while testing new vineyard and cellar approaches. His work includes separate parcels and old-vine material across Bairrada, with each wine retaining its specific source and composition.
Daughter Maria João Pato has developed her own wines and collaborates within the family context, but her producer identity remains distinct. Documented experiments are described as dated milestones rather than proof that every current Luis Pato wine uses the same method. From Bairrada, Luis Pato continues to build his range around Baga and other Portuguese varieties.
Luis Pato 2023 Vinhas Velhas Branco
Elegant fruit aromas appear with soft acidity, freshness and breadth. The blend contains fifty percent Bical, twenty-five percent Cercial and twenty-five percent Sercialinho. Hand-picked grapes grow in sandy soils. Juice from suction pressing matures in stainless steel. The name Vinhas Velhas refers to old vines. This dry, medium-bodied white comes from Portugal’s Beiras region and carries 12.5 percent alcohol.
Luis Pato 2000 Quinta do Moinho Baga
Dark fruit, red and black berries and mint lead, followed by leather, game, iron, menthol and a measured touch of vanilla. The palate is elegant and refined, with tangy, juicy fruit carried by lively energy and balanced structure. Herbaceous detail and a savoury, claret-like character deepen with air. The finish is composed and persistent, leaving dark fruit, earth and mature complexity.
