AboutKleinood

Gerard and Libby de Villiers acquired the fruit farm that became Kleinood in 2000, on the slopes of the Helderberg outside Stellenbosch. Of its 12 arable hectares, ten were planted to vines and two to olives. Kleinood means something small and precious, while Tamboerskloof recalls the Cape Town neighbourhood where the family lived for 25 years.

Syrah became the central variety, with vineyard blocks managed and vinified separately. The labels are printed on an antique press, torn and applied by hand.

Kleinood 2017 Tamboerskloof Syrah

South African Red
$56.99

Cranberry, blackberry and blackcurrant open with plum, violet and jasmine. White pepper and a light dusting of spice add savoury lift without overwhelming the fruit. The palate is elegant and composed, with rounded tannins carrying a fresh line through the middle. A lingering finish returns to dark berries, flowers and gentle pepper. Pair with lamb, venison, grilled beef or tomato-based dishes with warm spices.
