AboutJoh. Jos. Christoffel Erben
The Christoffel estate in the Middle Mosel belonged to the Christoffel family for four centuries. Hans-Leo Christoffel began looking for a successor in 2001.
Winemaker Philippe Conzen works with Riesling from steep vineyards around Erden and Ürzig, with slate and volcanic-influenced soils. In the cellar, the wines undergo spontaneous fermentation in seasoned Fuder casks.
Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben 2021 Erdener Treppchen Riesling Kabinett
Elderflower and green apple meet honey, a light petrol note and cool slate minerality. The palate is feather-light yet concentrated, with mango, melon and orange held in balance by medium-high acidity. Gently off-dry and finely textured, it finishes clean, mineral and persistent. Serve with spicy dishes, pork or washed-rind cheese.
Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben 2007 Erdener Treppchen Riesling Auslese **
Intense aromas of sassafras, black liquorice and brown spice lead a rich, creamy palate, with stewed persimmons and darker fruit adding depth. Smoky stone and slate notes emerge beneath the sweetness, giving the wine a savoury mineral counterpoint. Substantial yet balanced, it finishes long and layered. Serve lightly chilled with blue cheese, fruit tart or almond pastries.
Joh. Jos. Christoffel 2022 Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Spätlese
Bright and layered on the nose, with pear, strawberry, lime blossom, bee pollen and a gentle thread of spice over apple blossom. The palate is pure, medium-full and vibrant, carrying a generous core of fruit above fine slate minerality. Fresh acidity shapes a long, complex and beautifully balanced finish.
Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben 2016 Erdener Treppchen Riesling Kabinett
Floral and highly expressive, with honeysuckle, orange blossom and a subtle sassafras note above ripe Persian melon. The palate feels glossy yet buoyant, its sweetness neatly harnessed by vivid lime and clementine. Tingling brightness and mouthwatering salinity drive a remarkably persistent finish, keeping the wine refreshing from start to finish.
