AboutIntellego Wines
Jurgen Gouws founded Intellego Wines in 2009, using earnings from two harvests in Russia and second-hand barrels to begin on a deliberately modest scale. His earlier cellar work included time with Eben Sadie, Tom Lubbe, Craig Hawkins and Stéphane Ogier. Based in the Paardeberg, he selects vineyard parcels across the Swartland.
Farming uses compost, cover crops, mulch and organic sprays. Cultured yeast, bacteria and processing aids are not added during fermentation.
Intellego 2021 Kedungu
South African Red
Hand-harvested Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Syrah and Pinotage were fermented separately, mostly under carbonic conditions, with some open-top semi-carbonic treatment. After eight days, the lots were pressed into neutral French barrels, aged for ten months, blended and bottled unfined and unfiltered with a small sulphur addition. Red and black berries, wild herbs, earth and black pepper appear with tart-fruit acidity and a long finish.
Intellego 2020 Chenin Blanc
South African White
Hay, naartjie, peach and cut apple appear with fresh acidity and a gently savoury finish. The medium-bodied wine is made entirely from Chenin grown on a single Paardeberg hillside vineyard of nineteen-year-old bush vines. Hand-harvested fruit is whole-bunch pressed with solids, and spontaneous fermentation takes place in neutral 500-litre French foudres. The wine ages eleven months on gross lees without bâtonnage and is bottled unfined and unfiltered with a small sulphur addition.
