AboutHenry of Pelham
Henry of Pelham’s roots reach to 1794, when United Empire Loyalist Nicholas Smith received the deed to the Niagara land that remains the family farm. His son Henry built an inn, tavern and carriage house there in 1842, signing the liquor licence ‘Henry of Pelham’ in a playful nod to a former British prime minister. The modern vineyard took shape in 1984, when Paul and Bobbi Speck set their three sons to hand-planting Riesling and Chardonnay on the Short Hills Bench.
Its first vintage followed in 1988, the same year the winery helped establish the Vintners Quality Alliance with a small group of Niagara peers. Brothers Paul, Matthew and Daniel have owned the winery since 1993, dividing leadership across the business while remaining closely involved with the vineyards and final wines.
Henry of Pelham 2024 Baco Noir
Dried cherry, prune and Concord grape appear with molasses, liquorice, dried flowers, vanilla and coffee. The palate has good depth of dark fruit, supple weight and integrated tannins, with coffee on the finish. Made from Baco Noir in the Niagara Peninsula, this Ontario red draws on a winter-hardy, dark-skinned hybrid variety. The family farm dates to the nineteenth century, and the winery is among the region’s pioneers.
