AboutDomaine Jean-Louis Chave

The Chave family has grown vines from father to son since 1481. Based in Mauves, the estate works parcels in Hermitage and Saint-Joseph, two steep northern Rhône landscapes long tied to the family. Jean-Louis Chave directs the domaine, continuing the work of his father Gérard.

Grapes are harvested parcel by parcel, then fermented and aged separately before the final blends are assembled. During the 1990s, the domaine began restoring the Bachasson slope in Saint-Joseph, returning to ground where earlier generations of Chaves had worked.

Domaine Jean-Louis Chave 1999 Hermitage Rouge

French
$1,289.99
Blackberry and cassis are joined by smoked red fruit, cedar, cigar wrapper, dried flowers and peppery thyme. The palate is concentrated and richly textured, with firm tannins, mineral depth and a savoury line of flint, tar and Provençal herbs. The structure remains substantial, but the mature aromatics are expressive. Decant carefully and serve with roast lamb, venison, braised beef or lentils with smoked sausage.
