Crown Royal was created in 1939 for the Canadian visit of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. More than six hundred trials preceded the final blend, which was presented in a cut-glass decanter and the purple bag that remains one of the label’s signatures.
Its distillery in Gimli, Manitoba, stands on the western shore of Lake Winnipeg, where whisky is distilled, matured and blended. The team works with corn, rye and barley in different recipes, ageing the whiskies in new or reused charred oak before blending.

The palate is smooth and full, bringing caramel and red-grape richness through the centre while a measured tartness keeps the fruit defined. Fine wood tannin and anise add shape. The finish is warming and spicy, with clove, dark fruit and restrained oak lingering evenly.
