AboutCosters del Siurana
Journalist Carles Pastrana and winemaker Mariona Jarque began Costers del Siurana, the family winery behind Clos de l’Obac, in Gratallops in the late 1970s. They restored old vineyards and replanted abandoned slate slopes along the Siurana, bringing in their first harvest in 1989. Their children Guillem and Iona also work in the family project.
The steep vineyards grow Grenache, Samsó and Cabernet Sauvignon, with old goblet-trained vines among the plantings. For its principal wines, the family keeps the same grape varieties and proportions from year to year, allowing the vintage to shape the blend’s character. The wines mature in French oak and are drawn off their sediment by hand by candlelight.
Costers del Siurana 2005 Miserere Priorat
Blackberry, black plum and preserved dark fruit lead into warm spice, leather and a measured tobacco note. The palate is full-bodied and mature, with concentrated fruit held by rounded, ripe tannins rather than hard edges. Savoury oak and earthy detail add depth as the wine opens, while a steady mineral line keeps the richness composed. The finish is long, dry and gently spiced.
Costers del Siurana 1996 Dolç de l’Obac 500 mL
Dark cherry, black raspberry and raisin are layered with chocolate, marzipan and a delicate floral lift. The palate is thick, sweet and powerful, yet ripe acidity keeps the richness fresh and surprisingly poised. Cola, warm spice and a firm tannic line shape the lingering finish. Serve in small pours with dark chocolate or aged cheese.
