AboutCheckMate Artisanal Winery
Anthony von Mandl founded CheckMate Artisanal Winery to explore Chardonnay and Merlot in the Okanagan Valley. The team studies the vineyards block by block, including sections as small as eleven rows. Its sites range from Dekleva-Combret near Oliver to the heat-retaining rock of Jagged Rock and the deep sands of Border Vista at the Canada–US border.
For Chardonnay, the grapes are sorted by hand and pressed as whole bunches. Fermentation and ageing use a variety of vessels, including oak, with lees stirring to develop texture.
CheckMate Artisanal Winery 2022 Fool’s Mate Chardonnay
Canadian White
Subtle orchard fruit leads with pear, apricot and quince, followed by lemon, lime zest and a clear mineral edge. The palate opens creamy, then tightens around fresh acidity and crunchy fruit. Almond and freshly baked bread bring measured richness without obscuring the citrus line. Textural and composed through the middle, it finishes long and persistent with a precise balance of fruit, freshness and restrained oak.
CheckMate 2020 Attack Chardonnay
Canadian White
Seaside air, flint and citrus blossom frame white peach and a subtle smoky note. The palate is creamy yet precise, layering juicy peach, Asian pear, nectarine and mandarin over measured acidity. Integrated oak adds shape without weight, while mineral salinity, gentle spice and a touch of honey draw out a long, clean and refreshing finish.
CheckMate 2020 Opening Gambit Merlot 1.5 L (Magnum)
Canadian Red
Black cherry, cassis and blueberry lead, lifted by violets and savoury spice. The palate is rich yet energetic, layering raspberry, blackberry and tart cranberry with dark chocolate, tobacco, clove and black pepper. Fine, polished tannins give the wine firm shape, while lively acidity and a subtle saline note carry the finish.
