Château de Pitray
Château de Pitray
AboutChâteau de Pitray
Château de Pitray has remained in the same family for six centuries, on the limestone plateau east of Saint-Émilion. Jean de Boigne, grandson of Vicomte Louis de Pitray, took over from his parents in 2020. A nineteenth-century château stands on land with traces of a medieval manor and a prehistoric dolmen.
The core vineyard forms a single south-facing block on clay and limestone, planted chiefly to Merlot with Cabernet Franc and Malbec. Since the 2020 vintage, Jean has worked with Nina Mitjavile in the vineyard and cellar. Fermentation uses indigenous yeasts, and daily tasting guides the choice between tank and barrel ageing. The vines are cultivated without herbicides.

Ripe black fruit, spice and floral notes accompany an ample palate. The structure is solid, with freshness, velvety tannins and a long savoury finish. The blend comprises seventy-five percent Merlot, twenty-three percent Cabernet Franc and two percent Malbec. Vines grow on a clay-limestone plateau. Part of the wine matures in cement and part in oak for about twelve months.
