Castello di Perno
Castello di Perno
AboutCastello di Perno
Castello di Perno stands above Perno in Monforte d’Alba, where a medieval fortress later became a residence. Publisher Giulio Einaudi bought it in the late 1970s and made it a retreat for writers, including Primo Levi. Gregorio Gitti acquired the property in 2012, renewing its cultural role and reviving winemaking.
A cellar at nearby Castelletto opened in 2013, where grapes are selected by hand before fermentation. Large Austrian oak casks are used for Langhe Nebbiolo and Barolo; the estate also works with Barbera vineyards in Nizza.
Castello di Perno 2020 Langhe Nebbiolo
Italian Red
Savoury, woodland and autumnal aromas open slowly, joined by florals, sliced orange and a balsamic lift. The palate is light and fresh, with transparent red fruit, orange rind and dried lemon peel carried by delicate tannins. Woodland spice and a subtle nutty note emerge on the clean, distinctive finish.
Castello di Perno 2018 Nizza Barbera
Italian Red
Fresh flowers, crushed cherry, baked strawberry and thyme accompany a medium-bodied palate with silky tannins, fresh acidity and mineral depth. The Barbera comes from a 2.5-hectare, south-facing vineyard planted with eighty-year-old vines on chalk and silex. The grapes are destemmed and cold soaked for forty-eight hours; fermentation is spontaneous and maturation takes place in wood. Alcohol is fifteen percent.
Castello di Perno Perno 2017 Barolo Riserva
Italian Red
Dried rose, red cherry and ripe plum open with tar, leather and liquorice. The palate is full-bodied and elegant, its firm tannins integrated by vibrant acidity and generous fruit. Blackberry and cranberry meet forest floor, tobacco and warm spice as the wine develops. Balsamic, anise and mineral notes extend the finish, giving this structured Riserva both depth and composed persistence.
