AboutCastellare di Castellina

Paolo Panerai brought four estates together in the 1970s to create the modern Castellare di Castellina, in the heart of Chianti Classico. Its vineyards form a southeast-facing amphitheatre of limestone marl, galestro and clay, with native Tuscan varieties at the centre of its Chianti Classico wines. An experimental vineyard developed with the universities of Milan and Florence helped the estate select Sangiovese clones suited to its land.

Émile Peynaud guided its early work with French oak, while restored concrete tanks still hold wines before bottling. The vineyards are farmed without synthetic chemicals, a commitment reflected in labels that feature a different threatened local bird each vintage.

Vinification takes place in vats with alcoholic and malolactic fermentation, followed by seven months in French oak and a further seven months in bottle.

Castellare di Castellina 2019 I Sodi di San Niccolò Toscana Rosso

Italian Red
$199.99
Ripe cherry, dark berries and currants open with violet, vanilla, leather and cedar. The palate is full and richly textured, its concentrated fruit held by firm, fine-grained tannins and precise balance. Earthy and savoury detail develops beneath the fruit while the structure remains supple. The finish is long and composed, returning to dark berries, aromatic herbs, spice and polished tannin.

Castellare di Castellina Grappa di Sangioveto

Italian Marc & Grappa
$141.99
Fresh floral aromas lead, with iris and a clean grape character giving the spirit lift. The palate is dry, clear and finely textured, balancing aromatic intensity with a softer, more graceful feel than its strength might suggest. Distillation soon after pressing preserves the freshness of the Sangioveto marc and keeps the profile precise rather than heavy. The finish is elegant and persistent, carrying flowers, grape skin and gentle warmth. Serve neat after a meal.

Castellare di Castellina 2019 I Sodi di San Niccolò 3L

Italian Red
$849.99
Ripe raspberry and black cherry are layered with violets, wild rosemary, white pepper and a mineral, iron-like note. The palate is medium-bodied and elegant, adding amaro, clove, mint and orange zest around pure Sangiovese fruit. Firm, ripe tannins give the wine structure without sacrificing its sleek line. Decant generously and serve with bistecca, braised beef, wild boar or aged Pecorino.

Castellare di Castellina 2018 Vin Santo San Niccolò

Italian Dessert
$72.99
A concentrated Tuscan Vin Santo with dried apricot, citrus peel, toasted nuts and warm spice. Fresh acidity lifts the sweetness and leaves a long, gently savoury finish.
