AboutCasale del Giglio

The Santarelli family founded Casale del Giglio in 1967 at Le Ferriere, on the coastal plain south of Rome. Coming from a wine business established in 1914, they took an experimental approach to a part of Lazio with little established winegrowing tradition. A research vineyard planted in 1985 tested almost sixty varieties to see which best suited the maritime conditions.

Antonio Santarelli and winemaker Paolo Tiefenthaler have worked together since the early 1990s, developing the results of those trials. Their work also includes Bellone and Biancolella, helping renew interest in Lazio’s local grapes.

Casale del Giglio 2021 Faro della Guardia Biancolella Lazio IGT

Italian White
$53.99
Pale yellow colour with a green tint accompanies ripe golden peach, fresh apricot and floral perfume. The palate is flinty and fresh, with citrus on a lingering fruity finish. Biancolella grows on Ponza at the base of a sea cliff near the island’s lighthouse. The wine remains on its lees for seven to eight months before bottling. The site has volcanic and calcareous soils.
