AboutCarmen

Christian Lanz founded Viña Carmen in 1850 and named the winery after his wife. In 1994, Jean-Michel Boursiquot identified Carmenère in one of its Alto Maipo vineyards, a discovery that helped establish the grape as a signature of Chilean wine.

The winery works across several Chilean valleys with grapes including Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Its Carmen DO project takes a closer look at individual growers, old vineyards and the places behind the wines.

Its eighty-year-old, head-trained Melozal vineyard lies on an east-facing slope over granitic soils containing twelve to twenty-three percent clay.
