Avennia began with a 2009 conversation between Marty Taucher and winemaker Chris Peterson, who found common ground in a plan for a distinctly Washington winery. With Lauren Smith and Colleen Taucher also involved from the outset, the partnership made its first wine from the 2010 harvest and released it in 2012. Peterson brought seven years at DeLille Cellars and formal training through Walla Walla Community College’s Enology and Viticulture program. The partners established relationships with Washington growers around that first harvest, and those relationships have continued through later vintages.

Dark blackberry and blueberry open with grilled meat, crushed olive, black licorice, camphor and pen ink. Full-bodied and deeply concentrated, the palate remains balanced by bright acidity and sweet, fine tannins. Cracked black pepper, pan drippings, orange essence and hand-rubbed sage add savoury complexity. The finish is exceptionally long and nuanced, lingering on saline mineral notes, spice and dark fruit.
