AboutArdbeg Distillery

John Macdougall licensed Ardbeg in 1815 on Islay’s rocky southern coast. Production stopped in 1981, resumed on a small scale in 1989 and closed again in 1991, before the Glenmorangie Company bought the distillery and restored full-time production in 1997.

Ardbeg uses peated malt and water from Loch Uigeadail, with fermentation in Oregon pine vats followed by copper-pot distillation. A purifier returns heavier vapours to the spirit still for redistillation, helping bring fruit and floral notes alongside the smoke. Bourbon casks form the foundation of maturation, with other types also used across the range.
