William Grant & Sons began in Dufftown in 1887, when William Grant and his nine children ran the first spirit from the Glenfiddich distillery they had built. That first distillation took place on Christmas Day, and the family established The Balvenie in 1892. Six generations have been involved in the business, which remains wholly family-owned. In 2005, the company introduced Monkey Shoulder, a Scotch made by blending and marrying small batches of Speyside single malts, with cocktails in mind.
