AboutViña Tinajas
The Mena Undurraga family established Viña Tinajas in 1997 after buying vineyards in Villa Alegre, in Chile’s Maule Valley. Parts of the vineyard had been established in 1918; the family renewed the plantings while preserving the adobe buildings and old oak casks.
The 300-hectare estate grows Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Carménère. At Fundo Lagares del Maule, stainless-steel winemaking and modern bottling equipment now work alongside the older cellar buildings.
Viejo Feo 2023 Reserva Carménère
Deep violet colour shows blue reflections. Blackberry, chocolate, coffee, black pepper and lavender accompany soft fruit and a smooth, medium-bodied palate. Made entirely from Carménère in Chile’s Maule Valley, the wine spends six months in oak, with half of it in French oak. Alcohol is 13.5 percent, and the bottle is closed with a cork.
