Aurelio Montes and Douglas Murray began the work that became Viña Montes with a 1987 Cabernet Sauvignon harvest in Chile. The company was founded in 1988 under the name Discover Wines and soon exported the first Montes Alpha wines. The founders later developed vineyards and a winery in Apalta within the Colchagua Valley, while adding separate Chilean sites.

Aurelio Montes has led winemaking, with a wider team and subsequent generation contributing to the present family company. Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Carmenère appear in different ranges, and each wine retains its own vineyard and blend specifications. Montes remains a Chilean family wine company whose modern history began with its 1987 harvest and early exports.
