AboutSt. Francis Winery & Vineyards
Joe Martin bought a Sonoma Valley vineyard in 1971 and planted Chardonnay and Merlot. He opened St. Francis Winery & Vineyards with Lloyd Canton in 1979; the Kopf family joined in 1988 and owns the winery today.
Four certified-sustainable estate vineyards in Sonoma Valley and Russian River Valley supply fruit alongside grapes from long-standing Sonoma growers. Their varied soils and warmer and cooler sites support Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet and old-vine Zinfandel. The winery reuses cleaned water for irrigation, uses solar power and monitors soil moisture to guide watering.
St Francis 2022 Sonoma County Chardonnay
Green apple, juicy pear and melon appear with a background note of marzipan. The wine is refreshing and medium-bodied, with bright acidity, a silky texture and a smooth, mineral finish. Grapes come from estate vineyards in Sonoma Valley and Russian River Valley, along with selected growers in Carneros and Alexander Valley. They are picked at night or early morning, whole-cluster pressed and fermented in separate lots. Ageing lasts six months in French oak, including twenty percent new barrels.
St. Francis 2016 Old Vines Zinfandel Sonoma County
Red raspberry, wild blackberry and cranberry bring freshness to a ripe, generous fruit profile. Anise, cinnamon and toasted oak add warmth without overwhelming the fruit, while velvet tannins give the palate a smooth, rounded shape. Medium-bodied and balanced, the Zinfandel carries its spice through a long, supple finish.
