AboutSt.Bernardus
St.Bernardus began beside a cheese dairy in Watou, which Evariste Deconinck had bought from French Trappist monks. Brewing started in 1946 under licence for Westvleteren, with brewmaster Mathieu Szafranski bringing the recipes and St Sixtus yeast to the new brewery. When the licence ended in 1992, the beers continued under the St.Bernardus name.
Hans Depypere bought the brewery in 1998, beginning a new period of family stewardship and expansion. Its flagship Abt 12 is a 10% quadrupel made to the original 1946 recipe, alongside a range that includes Tripel, Prior 8, Pater 6 and Wit.
St. Bernardus Abt 12
Belgian Beer
Dark and full-bodied, with a creamy texture and a generous fruit-led aroma shaped by expressive yeast. The palate is rich yet remarkably rounded, balancing gentle sweetness with measured bitterness and layers of dark fruit, caramel and warm spice. A long bittersweet finish provides definition and keeps the weight composed. Serve cool with braised beef, game, blue cheese or dark chocolate, all of which can meet the beer's depth and intensity.
