In 2023, Small Gods in Sidney and Vancouver’s Luppolo brewed a Czech-style dark lager together. Small Gods is family-operated and brings literature, food and beer together at its Sidney taproom. Luppolo’s owners, Eleanor, Ryan, Anique and Fede, drew on Italian brewery culture for their neighbourhood space on Venables Street.

Traditional floor-malted grain gives the palate a deep roasted profile, with dark chocolate and coffee at the centre. The character is rich but clearly lager-shaped, keeping the malt detail orderly rather than heavy. A clean line through the palate lets the roast linger without becoming blunt. Serve cool with roast pork, sausages, mushroom dishes, smoked cheese or dense rye bread.
