AboutSigurd Wines
Dan launched Sigurd Wines in South Australia in 2012, and his partner Marta joined the business in 2020. The name honours his great-grandfather, Sigurd Thorwaldsen Gran, who moved from Norway to the Riverland after serving in the First World War. Sigurd’s daughter Joan grew grapes and stone fruit, while her son Ralph, Dan’s father, became a winemaker.
Before returning to the Barossa, Dan studied winemaking and viticulture and worked vintages in Central Otago, Canada, Portugal, the Rhône and Barolo. His approach includes earlier picking, some whole-bunch fermentation and native yeasts, with a small addition of sulphur at bottling.
Sigurd 2022 Red Blend
Dark plum, raspberry, blueberry and tender dark fruit meet forest-floor character and cinnamon. The palate is fresh and savoury, with crisp fruit, soft tannins and bright acidity. The blend brings together Syrah, Grenache, Carignan, Mourvèdre and Lagrein. Indigenous yeasts and carbonic maceration are used, and the wine is made with minimal intervention and very little added sulphur.
