Steve Planthaber founded Settlement in Marlborough after twelve years of production and operations experience at Cloudy Bay. He grew up in South Australia’s Barossa Valley, studied chemistry in New Zealand and later made Marlborough the base of his own label. Settlement sources fruit from selected organic single vineyards in the Wairau and Southern Valleys rather than one contiguous estate.

Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling and Pinot Noir are produced as separate site expressions under Steve’s direction. Fermentation and maturation are adapted to each vineyard and variety. Settlement remains a small Marlborough project built around Planthaber’s winemaking and four organic single-vineyard wines.
