AboutScali

Willie and Tania de Waal make Scali at Schoone Oord, their family farm on Paardeberg’s southeastern slopes between Paarl and Malmesbury. The property has been in the family since 1877, across five generations of winegrowers. The couple began making wine with just 50 litres in 1993, followed by their first barrel of Pinotage in 1997.

They farm organically, avoiding synthetic pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and fertilizers. Their cellar methods include fermentation with native yeasts and ageing in older French oak, with choices made for each wine. Bottling and packaging are done by hand at Schoone Oord.

South African Red
$53.99

A dark-fruited Syrah with ripe plum and blackberry, joined by violet, black pepper, fennel and local herbal notes. The palate is balanced and savoury, with firm tannins, steady acidity and a clear mineral thread supporting the fruit. Long and composed on the finish, it is a natural match for grilled lamb, beef, mushrooms or peppered dishes.

Seductive ripe red berries lead, layered with warm spice and a stony mineral note.
