AboutSage Hills
Rick and Toby Thrussell established Sage Hills after purchasing a Summerland orchard in 2006 and planting vines the following year. They remain the owners and daily operators, while their son Keenan has managed the vineyard and winemaking since 2017.
The ten-acre vineyard is planted principally to Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir and Gewürztraminer and has been organically farmed since planting. The winery makes small lots using naturally occurring yeasts, with sparkling, white, skin-contact, red and fortified wines in its range.
Sage Hills 2022 First Pick Merlot
Bright red cherry and plum lead a fresher, more lifted expression, with lively acidity and gentle tannins keeping the palate precise. The fruit remains clear and lightly savoury rather than heavy, carrying into a clean, supple finish. Its energetic shape makes it well suited to roast poultry, mushrooms or lentil dishes.
Sage Hills 2022 Carbonic Pinot Gris
Cherry, raspberry and salmonberry give this skin-contact Pinot Gris a vivid red-fruited profile, balanced by delicate tannins and bright acidity. Ten days in a sealed, carbon-dioxide-rich environment shape its juicy, lightly structured character, while extended lees ageing adds texture without dulling the freshness. Energetic and quietly savoury, it works well with a slight chill and flavourful vegetable or seafood dishes.
Sage Hills 2022 Second Pick Merlot
Ripe plum and dark cherry give the palate a generous core, balanced by fresh acidity and a lightly savoury edge. Partial whole-cluster fermentation adds lift, while twelve days on skins and seven months in neutral barrel build supple texture without overt oak. Unfined and unfiltered, it finishes smoothly with measured structure.
Sage Hills Vineyard 2017 Pinot Gris
Pear, subtle peach and tart, pithy lemon peel appear in a clear, crisp profile. The palate is lean and citrus-led. Organically grown Pinot Gris from Summerland Bench in the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia, Canada, was fermented in stainless steel. Apple is also present, and the dry finish is crisp and refreshing. Production totalled eight hundred forty-four cases.
Sage Hills 2022 Malbec Rosé
Barrel ageing forms part of the production for this Malbec rosé from the Okanagan Valley. Alcohol is thirteen percent. The winery is located in Summerland, British Columbia, and holds Canada Organic Regime certification for crop production and preparation. The release forms part of its certified organic wine program, with Malbec used for the rosé itself.
Sage Hills 2023 Field Blend
Lemon, lime, green apple and white peach appear in a dry profile. The blend contains 70 percent Pinot Gris and 30 percent Gewürztraminer from an estate vineyard in Summerland. The fruit was whole-cluster direct pressed and co-fermented, then spent seven months on lees in stainless steel. Twenty parts per million of sulphur dioxide were added before bottling. The sixteen-year-old vineyard is certified organic and rooted in sandy clay loam over broken bedrock.
Sage Hills 2023 Pinot Gris
Juicy apple, ripe pear and bright lemon sit alongside herbaceous complexity, lively acidity and a juicy finish. Fruit from the certified-organic estate vineyard was harvested by hand in three separate pickings. Two thirds of the bunches were whole-cluster direct pressed, while one third received six days of cold carbonic maceration. Wild fermentation took place in stainless steel and neutral barrel, followed by twelve months on lees. The wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered with minimal sulphites.
Sage Hills 2022 Gewürztraminer
Floral character comes with lychee, ginger, lemon and subtle spice. Gewürztraminer from the certified-organic estate was harvested in three separate pickings during October. Wild fermentation took place in neutral oak and stainless steel. The wine then aged on its lees for eight months, received minimal sulphites, and was bottled unfined and unfiltered. The finished white contains fourteen percent alcohol by volume.
Sage Hills 2020 Ancestral Method Pinot Gris
Estate-grown Pinot Gris comes from thirteen-year-old vines in sandy clay loam. Half the fruit was whole-cluster direct pressed, while half was destemmed; fermentation took place in stainless steel. Bottled during primary fermentation, the wine spent twelve months on lees before hand disgorgement, with no dosage or added sulphites. Bright red fruit, cherry, raspberry and grapefruit appear in a dry sparkling profile.
Sage Hills 2022 Barrel Fermented Pinot Gris
Buttery citrus and bright acidity shape this Pinot Gris. Estate fruit was harvested on October 23 and whole-cluster pressed. A combination of new light-toast French oak and neutral oak was used, with bâtonnage limited to the new-oak portion. The wine spent seven months on lees in barrel, received minimal sulphites, and was bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Sage Hills 2022 Pinot Noir
Ripe red and black cherry accompany earthy complexity, a round silky body and soft tannins. The estate Pinot Noir is certified Organic and was harvested by hand. Thirty percent of the fruit remained as whole clusters, while seventy percent was destemmed as whole berries. Maceration lasted twelve days, followed by twenty-four months on lees in neutral oak. The wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered, with ten parts per million of sulphur dioxide added beforehand.
Sage Hills 2017 Merlot
Fresh cherry and juicy plum lead, with dried herbs and a gentle earthy note adding complexity. The palate is light to medium-bodied, supple and smooth, balancing bright fruit with soft tannins and refreshing acidity. Serve slightly cool with roast chicken, grilled mushrooms, pork tenderloin or lentil dishes.
Sage Hills 2022 Red Blend
Ripe Bing cherry, plum and blackberry lead, with liquorice adding a darker, savoury accent. Wild fermentation in stainless steel preserves clarity across the three-variety blend, while 24 months on lees in neutral barrels brings measured texture. Unfined and unfiltered, the palate closes with delicate, soft tannins and a composed, naturally expressive finish.
