Põhjala began in Tallinn in late 2011, when four Estonian friends turned a shared interest in food, beer and homebrewing into a brewery. Brewer Chris Pilkington soon joined them, helping turn homebrew recipes into commercial beers. The name roughly means “northern land” and refers to a place in Finno-Ugric mythology.
After an early period using other facilities, Põhjala opened its own brewery in Tallinn’s Nõmme district in 2014 and moved in 2018 to a former shipyard building in Noblessner. The Noblessner site combines production with a taproom, kitchen and room for small experimental batches. Dark porters and barrel-aged beers are a particular focus, alongside pale, hoppy, tart and seasonal releases.

Estonian Beer
Smooth and approachable, this porter layers vanilla and chocolate over a rounded base of oats and rye. Caramel malt, red berries and coffee add definition through the middle, followed by a light touch of nuttiness and toffee. The finish is creamy, gently roasted and balanced rather than heavy. Serve cool with braised beef, smoked cheese, mushroom dishes, chocolate cake or toasted nuts.
Põhjala Öö XO Cognac Barrel-Aged Imperial Baltic Porter 330 mL
Estonian Beer
Dark fruit, plum, raisin, cranberry and grape lead into espresso, dark sugar and a flicker of spice. Cognac-barrel ageing folds liquorice, honey, molasses and dark chocolate into a silky bed of roasted malt, while elegant tannins keep the richness in check. This is a powerful imperial Baltic porter, but the fruit and oak remain composed through the finish.
