AboutOpus One
Opus One was founded in 1979 by Napa Valley vintner Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild. Its four estate parcels lie in western Oakville: 100 acres within To Kalon and a combined 70 acres in the Ballestra and River parcels around the winery.
Winemaker Michael Silacci oversees the work from tasting and sorting the fruit through maturation in new French oak. The estate holds CCOF organic certification and Napa Green winery and vineyard certifications, and takes part in restoration along the Napa River.
Opus One 2009 Napa Valley
American Red
Deep garnet and finely layered, with redcurrant, baked plum, dried blackberry and stewed cherry joined by dark chocolate, espresso and sweet spice. The palate is silky but substantial, carrying ripe fruit through polished tannins and a savoury mineral line. Balanced and persistent rather than heavy, it opens well with air and is an excellent partner for roast beef or lamb.
Opus One 2003 Napa Valley
American Red
Blackberry, plum and dried cherry open into hazelnut, graphite, cocoa and a subtle olive note. The palate is broad yet balanced, with supple tannins and savoury herbal detail beneath the dark fruit. Dark chocolate and black liquorice linger on the finish, giving the wine a composed, mature profile. Decant carefully and serve with roast beef, lamb, braised short ribs or grilled mushrooms.
Opus One 1981 Napa Valley
American Red
Dark cherry, plum and blackcurrant have moved into cedar, cigar box, leather and graphite. The palate is medium-bodied and composed, with resolved tannins, gentle freshness and a savoury line of coffee, dried violet and earth. It is mature rather than forceful and benefits from careful handling. Stand upright before opening, decant only for sediment and serve with roast lamb, duck or mushrooms.
Opus One 2013 Napa Valley
American Red
Concentrated and aromatic, with blueberry, cassis, blackberry and black cherry lifted by rose, anise, baking spice, graphite and cedar. A creamy entry gives way to vibrant freshness, velvety tannins and impressive mid-palate depth. Rich but precisely balanced, it finishes very long and perfumed; allow generous air and serve with prime rib, grilled lamb or wild mushrooms.
