AboutChateau Montelena

Chateau Montelena began in 1882, when San Francisco entrepreneur Alfred Tubbs bought land near Calistoga. He planted vineyards and built the stone winery that still anchors the estate. After Prohibition, closure and a period as a private residence, Jim Barrett bought the property in 1972 and began replanting vineyards and updating its equipment. That revival reached the world stage when the estate’s 1973 Chardonnay, made by Mike Grgich, placed first among the white wines at the blind Paris tasting of 1976.

Bo Barrett is chief executive, while Matt Crafton is president and winemaker.

Chateau Montelena 2018 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

American Red
$169.99
A fresh, dynamic Cabernet Sauvignon with cranberry, raspberry jam and a light cola note. The palate is supple yet dense, with laser-focused acidity drawing the fruit and texture into a balanced, energetic shape. Fine tannins support rather than dominate, and the finish remains composed and lifted, holding the fruit, acidity and structure in clear balance.

Chateau Montelena 2013 The Montelena Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

American Red
$299.99
Black cherry, cassis and black pepper lead, layered with tomato leaf, meat and soy for a distinctly savoury profile. The palate is dense yet seamless, with grippy tannins supporting deep fruit and a long, composed finish. Elegant rather than flashy, it rewards decanting and suits roast lamb, grilled beef, braised short ribs, porcini dishes or aged hard cheese.
